Vibeke Strand, M.D. Dr. Vibeke Strand has over twenty years of experience as a clinical investigator and subspecialist rheumatologist in private practice as well as in senior positions in pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. ![]() For the past eleven years, she has served as an independent consultant to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, developing strategies for the efficient development of treatments for autoimmune diseases. She has assisted in defending NDAs and BLAs to the FDA, and has participated in FDA Advisory Panel Meetings discussing Draft Guidance Documents in RA, OA and SLE, radiographic analyses and JRA. She has worked to promote forums for the discussion of rational product development among industry, FDA and academia as cofounder of a biyearly conference, "Innovative Therapies in Autoimmune Diseases," and as a member of the organizing committees for six international consensus conferences on outcome measures for rheumatology clinical trials (OMERACT). She is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Immunology at Stanford University. As a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology, she has authored or coauthored more than 75 articles and 20 book and textbook chapters, and has co-edited two books. ![]() |

Lee Simon, M.D. In addition to his post at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Simon is Head Regulatory Consultant and Scientific Advisory Board member for MEDACorp, a consulting firm. ![]() Previously, Dr. Simon served as the Division Director of the Arthritis, Analgesic & Ophthalmologic Drug Product Division at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. He is a Section Editor on Osteoarthritis for Current Rheumatology Reports, and serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for numerous scientific publications. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Rheumatology, the Scientific Leadership Award from the Lupus Research Institute and the SLE Foundation, and the Quality Performance Award and the Faculty Recognition Award from the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. ![]() |

Bevra Hahn, M.D. Dr. Hahn is a Professor of Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Chief of Rheumatology at the School of Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles. ![]() She is a past president of the American College of Rheumatology. Among her many awards are the Dunlop-Dottridge Award from the Canadian Rheumatism Association for research in rheumatology, and the Joseph Bunim Medal and prize from the American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Hahn has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers and over 40 book chapters or reviews, and has served as co-editor of the influential textbook, Dubois’ Lupus Erythematosus. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and the Annals of Internal Medicine. ![]() |

Philip Mease, M.D. Dr. Mease is a clinical professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, and chief of rheumatology clinical research at the Swedish Hospital Medical Center. ![]() He conducts clinical trials of emerging therapies for a number of rheumatic disease conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and osteoporosis. Michael Schuster, M.D. Dr. Schuster is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Director of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Oncology Clinical Trials Programs at the New York Weill Cornell Center of the New York Presbyterian Hospital. ![]() His clinical research has focused on cachexia, cytokines, transplantation immunology, detection of minimal residual disease in lymphoma, and MDR expression in leukemia cells. Dr. Schuster has written journal articles, abstracts and chapters in books dealing with the clinical use of cytokines. In addition, Dr. Schuster serves on the editorial board of Stem Cells, and is a reviewer for Stem Cells, American Journal of Medicine, Leukemia and Lymphoma, Transplantation and The Lancet. ![]() |

Giovanni Mantovani, M.D. Dr. Mantovani is Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Cagliari and Director of the School of Specialization in Medical Oncology, Cagliari, Italy. He is a specialist in oncology, internal medicine, and hematology. ![]() His special interest is in cancer cachexia. Along with his research into the basic biology underlying cachexia (including cytokines), he has been involved with a number of cancer cachexia clinical trials including megestrol. Vickie Baracos, Ph.D. Dr. Baracos is Professor & Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Medicine, Adjunct Professor, Experimental Oncology and Adjunct Professor, Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta, Canada. ![]() Her research interests are centered on the biology of muscle metabolism and wasting with particular reference to muscle wasting in cancer cachexia. She has published 13 major articles and reviews on protein/muscle metabolism in cancer cachexia and a number of articles on muscle/protein metabolism in general. ![]() |

James Rigas, M.D. Dr. Rigas received his BS in Biology in 1977 from Cornell University and his M.D. in 1984 from Medical College of Pennsylvania. ![]() He completed his residency at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in 1988 and completed his oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Medical Center in 1990. From 1990 to 1995, he was an Instructor in Medicine at Cornell University Medical College and a Clinical Assistant Attending Physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 1995 he joined the faculty of the DHMC as Director of the Comprehensive Thoracic Oncology Program. Dr. Rigas's main clinical research interest is in thoracic oncology. He has had extensive experience in the development of investigational drugs for the study and treatment of lung cancer. ![]() |
